Aggression and your Dog
Q. When I chose my dog from a rescue shelter I was told he had not been brought up with the other puppies, or had any attention or socialisation. Now he is being aggressive to people when we are out walking and I find it difficult to control him sometimes. Is there anything that I can do to train him, or help control him?
Normally, pet dogs are sociable animals who enjoy interacting with people and other dogs. However, some dogs, possibly through lack of socialisation or through a bad experience, may become aggressive towards other dogs or even people.
If your dog is showing aggressive behaviour, you should seek professional help from a suitably qualified behaviour therapist. Your vet should be able to refer you Dog training classes are not the place to deal with this kind of problem.
In the interim, you will be able to gain more control by using a Halti or Halti Harness combined with a double-ended training lead. It is also wise to ensure that your dog is muzzled.
