Barking Problems
Q. How can I control my dog's barking? He often barks for no reason, and I have elderly neighbours whom I don't want to scare.
Barking can be a huge problem for dog owners and their neighbours and may lead to prosecution under noise abatement legislation.
Solution
-
Do not shout – your dog will think you are joining in.
-
Better to use an interruption such as, a spray of water, ‘Pet Corrector’ or an anti-barking collar.
-
Teaching your dog to bark on command can be a helpful way to control this behaviour.
-
Try not to give into your dog – do not give him attention or respond when he barks.
-
Reward him when he is quiet.
-
For dogs that bark at a given stimulus, frequent, low level exposure to that stimulus can make it less exciting and therefore the dog less reactive.
-
Dogs that bark when left home alone may be suffering from separation anxiety. Contact a reputable behaviour specialist to discuss this.
