Chewing & Stealing
Q. My dog, Freddie often steals things from around the house to chew. He chews on his new "toy" and I worry that one day he will pick up something dangerous. Can I train him not to steal?
Chewing of unsafe or unsuitable materials, be they household or personal items, garden plants, or most dangerous of all, electrical cabling, may have disastrous consequences.
Solution
- Provide your dog with lots of stimulating toys and chews, so that his chewing is focused appropriately. Stuff toys with food for added appeal.
- Increase level of mental stimulation- this could include going to training classes or introducing a new skill e.g. Clicker Training.
- Ensure that your dog has an active life – lots of walks etc will help keep him more content and relaxed when at home.
- Use a deterrent such as ‘Bitter Bite’ or ‘Stop Chew’
- The use of a ‘Houseline’ will help you to interrupt your dog’s behaviour in a non-confrontational manner.
