Jumping Up
Q. How can I train my dog to stop jumping up at people and on furniture?
This problem can be at least annoying and at worst downright dangerous. Even a small dog jumping up, can cause injury to a child or elderly, frail person.
Solution
- The dog needs to learn that jumping up is not the way to win friends and influence people.
- Ignoring the dog, folding arms and turning your back is the best way to react. He should receive no attention at all, even saying “no” or “down” is attention and thus can be perceived as a reward by the dog.
- The use of a ‘Houseline’ is an excellent way to reinforce the no jumping rule. Stepping on the ‘Houseline’ to prevent jumping at visitors or family members will ensure they can effectively ignore the dog, without being knocked over or scratched.
- For real persistent offenders, the ‘Pet Corrector’ can provide a solution. A couple of well-timed interventions with the ‘Pet Corrector’ spray will teach the dog that jumping up is not so much fun.
- Remember that rewarding desirable behaviours is just as important as interrupting undesirable ones. Treats and praise can be given whenever the dog does not jump up.
