Switching to 2 meals from 3

Q. Hi My puppy who is 21 weeks, is on royal Canin medium junior. The packet says to switch to 2 meals a day at 5 months, and wnated to know the best approach to this? Should I just switch or do it over time? A week or more or less? Thanks Garry

I have found that the best way to do the switch over from three meals to two is to gradually increase the size of the two meals you want to keep – most often that will be the earliest feed and the evening feed, depending on what routine you want to adopt long term. Start decreasing the size of the remaining meal. Take about two weeks to do this, slowly reducing the size of the meal you are cutting out and adjusting the amount between the other meals. Keep an eye on feeding amounts at around this time as the fastest period of growth is in the first 6 months and as growth slows down you might find the meal sizes have to be altered overall. There is no real hard and fast rule but I feel that taking this approach is kinder to your dog – they are less likely to be seeking food at a time it is no longer available.
