Hamster with Respiratory Problems

Q. I took my hamster to a vet and got antibiotics for her cold and respiratory problems. 12 Days later, her breathing is still poor. She is sleeping more and has lost weight, so is weaker. She is 5 months old. Any advice as to what I should do now?

I would advise you get your hamster seen again as the vet may need to give her more treatment or different ones.  If she is sleeping more and losing weight she is not getting enough nutrients to maintain her needs.  There is a risk she will be getting dehydrated.  You need to make another appointment

If your hamster is responding well then you may decide to continue as is.  The decision only needs to be made if he is not doing well.  Your vet is probably preparing you for the worst.

My hamster was seen by the vet again today, and prescribed Baytril again for 7 days. She is eating and drinking well again, although her lungs are a concern. The vet suggested it may be best to put her to sleep on Monday. Is this not too hasty a decision?
